This is Wednesday evening’s sermon for March 11th, 2009.

EVERYDAY WISDOM PART 24
The house that Wisdom built
Proverbs 24.

Before this church building was built, there were plans and blueprints and architect drawings. Basically, you could say that before this church was built, there was a vision, and of course a plan. And even though there was a plan, some things had to be changed as the building was taken place, but the basic plan was followed.

This morning we are going to look at Chapter 24 of proverbs in this context, like building a building. In a building you have rooms, furniture, plumbing, electricity, gas, and other things that all make up the building.

Our main text tonight will be Proverbs 24:3-4. We are going to see that Wisdom builds a house in three levels: It is first, built; then made secure; and finally, filled.

Proverbs 24:3-4 CJB – 3 By wisdom a house is built, by understanding it is made secure, 4 and by knowledge its rooms are filled with all kinds of costly and pleasant possessions.

First off the house that we are referring too is a holy residence – the life of the Christ follower.

This house is not just the human heart, but it is the person that has been transformed by Christ Jesus into the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV – 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been bought with a price, therefore we are not our own. In other words, we are not the masters of our Destiny – Christ is. Because of this truth, we who were by nature children of wrath have been made temples of the Holy Spirit. So because of this truth, our bodies which at one time lived for sin, should now glorify God.

When God saves us, He also puts within us the desire to obey His Word and the ability to do so.

Philippians 2:13 ISV – For it is God who is producing in you both the desire and the ability to do what pleases him.

And as I was studying Proverbs 24, I saw that it is done in three ways, so let’s look at the three ways.

We as the Temple of the Holy Spirit are being built by wisdom.

Proverbs 24:3a CJB – By wisdom a house is built…

First off this wisdom that builds our house is not the wisdom of the world, nor is it the wisdom and philosophies of the human heart; it is the wisdom that comes only from the Lord.

This temple that we are becoming has a foundation, and this foundation is the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 1:7 CJB – The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

This fear we have looked at before, but we need to repeat again. This is not talking about some cowering in fear before God, but an awesome respect for who He is, His name, and His Word. This is humbling ourselves before Him and His character completely. This is the foundation stone that we as the temple of the Holy Spirit are being built upon.

What are the benefits of fearing the Lord?

• The choices we make in life will be instructed by the Lord.
• He will reveal to us His covenant He has made with us.
• Not only will He reveal His truth, but we will walk in His truth.

Psalm 15:12 CJB – Who is the person who fears the LORD? He will teach him the way to choose.

Psalm 25:12 CJB – The LORD relates intimately with those who fear him; he makes them know his covenant.

Psalm 86:11 CJB – LORD, teach me your way, so that I can live by your truth; make me single-hearted, so that I can fear your name.

Let’s continue to the next aspect of this building project of the Lord’s.

We as the temple of the Holy Spirit are made secure and established by the understanding of the Lord.

Proverbs 24:3b CJB – by understanding it is made secure…

Most translations say “established.”

Another way of saying this is we are built solid.

How many of you have ever been in a building that wasn’t built secure? You could feel it sway in the wind.

That’s not the type of temple that our Lord is making us to be. We are built on Christ as our foundation, therefore He is building us secure.

Matthew 7:24-27 ISV – 24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, but it did not collapse because its foundation was on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and battered that house, and it collapsed, and its collapse was devastating.”

Before we go further, what is the proof that we have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit? Our obedience to Christ’s teachings. If you are truly Christ followers, we will be obedient and when the trials and winds, and floods of life come our way, we are secure in Him. We will not bend, we will not sway.

Let’s ask a question, is this talking about perfect obedience here? Well, we all would be disqualified if it did, because only Christ Jesus was perfectly obedient. Our obedience comes from Christ working in us, not our own ability to perform it.

Plus, notice what this passage in Proverbs 24 states.

Proverbs 24:16 CJB – For though he (the righteous) falls seven times, he will get up again; it’s the wicked who fail under stress.

We may at times fail, but we will not live in our failures, we will turn and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and He will pick us back up again.

Let’s look at a few passages of Scriptures from the New Testament that talks about his security that we have as believers.

John 10:27-28 ISV – 27 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

1 Peter 1:5 ISV – Through faith you are being protected by God’s power for a salvation that is ready to be revealed at the end of time.

2 Corinthians 1:21 ISV – Now the one who makes us—and you as well—secure in union with Christ and has anointed us is God.

Romans 8:38-39 ISV – 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jude 24-25 ISV – 24 Now to the one who is able to keep you from falling and to make you stand faultless in his glorious presence with rejoicing, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time and for all eternity! Amen.

Finally, we as the temple of the Holy Spirit are being furnished through the knowledge of the Lord.

Proverbs 24:4 CJB – and by knowledge its rooms are filled with all kinds of costly and pleasant possessions.

The Lord is not building so that we might be an empty temple. Just like the Jewish temple was costly and furnished, we too are furnished in our intimate knowledge of Him through costly and pleasant things.

What are the furnishings we possess?

• The fruit of the Spirit.
• The gifts of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 ISV – 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

1 Corinthians 11:4-11 ISV – 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the Spirit is the same; 5 and there are varieties of ministries, but the Lord is the same; 6 and there are varieties of results, but God is the same, and it is he who produces all the results in everyone. 7 To each person has been given the ability to display the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one has been given a message of wisdom by the Spirit; to another the ability to speak with knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit; 10 to another miraculous results; to another prophecy; to another the ability to distinguish between spirits; to another various kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit produces all these results and gives what he wants to each person.

We are going to close tonight. I hope that you see that God is building us into the temple of the Holy Spirit. We who were once far away He is now establishing us. We are being built in Wisdom, we are secure in Understanding, and we are filled by our being intimately known by Him and knowing Him.

What a true pleasure it is to follow Christ.
